Those of you who are regular visitors to my blog will know that I have a soft spot for interesting doors and door furniture and today’s post is another addition to my collection. I stopped off again in South Harting on my way home from school this afternoon and this time actually made it inside the church – last week I got sidetracked by the stocks just outside the gates. I spent 20 minutes or so shooting various features in the building and as I went to leave I noticed the wonderful ironwork on the inside of the door. I took a few shots but was really struggling with the lack of light, even using my 50mm lens at f1.8 and an ISO of 1600. I then wondered whether the outside offered any more possibilities and as I opened the heavy oak door I noticed the way the reflected light from outside the porch illuminated the handle, creating a shadow against the wood. This is the resulting photo – it was one of those moments when I absolutely knew I’d found my shot for the day. I love the way the ironwork has been weathered by centuries of parishioners’’ hands and the circular marks left in the oak from the turning of the handle. If only doors could talk about the many people they’ve seen and conversations they’ve overheard…
